parallel shelf

i drew inspiration for this design from the elegant mechanism within an architects parallel rule. the parallel rule slides on two cables, but somehow manages to stay in perfect orientation anywhere in its travel. the trick that allows this to work is simple, cross the wires within the ruler. through pure geometry and a few pulleys, the ruler is able to maintain orientation and slide without resistance. i wanted to build a set of shelves that have this same property. when the wires are under low tension, simply grab a shelf and pull it to the desired height. when the wires are under high tension, the position of the shelf is locked in place. i imagine this being useful for rotating display shelving such as a point of sale display or exhibiting a collection.
