lattice box

i imagine this piece as a modular system of cubic elements, each with a different function. the unit cells could be arranged in any configuration in 3 dimensions extending along all cardinal axes. i was inspired by modular wall systems of the 1960s and ionic crystal structures.

the box is made from maple and walnut. the drawers are able to slide in either direction. a sphere cutting jig was built to make the walnut nodes. a cube of wood was placed in the jig and rotated on its axis while a router was swept in an arc defining the surface of the sphere.
